Adjusting to a new city can be difficult after a big move – but staying active and exploring will turn your city into a playground in no time.

It’s safe to say that adjusting to a new city is a specialty of mine. Looking back on it, I realize now that I’ve lived in seven different cities in Southern CaliforniaYeesh.

That’s a lot of making new friends, getting acclimated to new communities, and settling down at new jobs and schools. Although I’ve done it so many times, I’d be lying if I said adjusting to seven different communities hasn’t been at least a little stressful.

Although Buddytruk would have reduced some of the stress that comes from moving and hauling, I’ve found that the best way to adjust to your new city is to, well, get out there! Whether you’ve made a move to a big city or a small town, my top three tips for adjusting to a new city will turn this stressful event into an opportunity to get healthy, make new friends, and turn your new city into your playground.

This tip might be the hardest to implement since the first thing a person usually wants to do after a move is relax and spend some time in front of a television. However, leading an active lifestyle is one of the best solutions for adjusting to a new city.

The endorphin rush from an easy run or a full workout can lead to a whole new outlook on your new city! Aside from the many health benefits of exercise when you plan to workout, you also have the opportunity to make new friends and relieve the stresses that come along with adjusting to a new city.

Furthermore, scheduling workouts with a new friend is great for getting you up early and prepared to explore your new city. Just this morning, my new friend Ryan and I planned to meet at 7 A.M. for a workout class. Truthfully, if I didn’t have plans to meet with him, I would have most likely stayed in bed and wasted away the morning.

Accountability is a wonderful thing to have when trying to be active in the early A.M., especially when you have very few connections in your new home. A planned active lifestyle will keep you moving, the endorphins flowing, and have you adjusting to a new city in no time.

Grabbing a meal and spending some quality time with co-workers is just part of adjusting to a new city, especially after stressful situations like a move or a haul!

It might sound simple, but the easiest solution for adjusting to a new city is to go out with some new friends or coworkers and grab a bite to eat! Easy, right?

Chances are your newest friends in your city will likely be coworkers. Use this to your advantage! They’ll be your best resource for adjusting to a new city and will be your culinary guides. Ask for recommendations, spend time with them at lunch, and don’t be afraid to try something new to eat (like the Octopus Salad at Tender Greens or the Spanish Latte at Urth!).

Furthermore, my new roommate and I love buying fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market. Not only does a trip to the farmer’s market show you another side of your city, but finding a new delicacy is an adventure in itself. Plus, it’s great to support local farmers too. Although it doesn’t necessarily exert a ton of energy, making an effort to share a meal will have you meeting new friends and staying healthy to boot – a great fix for adjusting to a new city.

Take a hike! Not only is it a great way to blow off steam, but it’s the most direct solution for adjusting to your city.

By far, the most thorough solution for adjusting to a new city and de-stressing after that big move is to explore everything your city has to offer. Everything. In a place like Los Angeles, creating a balanced lifestyle wouldn’t be anything without taking the time to explore the many hiking trails and parks of Santa Monica and Malibu, to checking out the great eateries in Sherman Oaks, to heading out to a Dodger game!

Each city has so much to offer, and it’s important to take the time to explore your new playground before getting overwhelmed by work and stress. Creating an active lifestyle and hanging out with your new coworkers will come in handy, but it’s up to you to make the most when adjusting to a new city!

With my experience moving seven times in my relatively short life so far, I more than understand that moving homes is an incredibly demanding and strenuous task.

I also know that becoming reacquainted with a new community presents quite the challenge. However, incorporating a healthy and active lifestyle into your routine can help to relieve many of the stresses associated with moving and adjusting to a new city.
